You're called the UNITED States of America
But you're not united at all
You were founded by immigrants
But you don't like letting immigrants in
Who are you America?
The statue of liberty that's hug around your neck
A symbol of hope and opportunity
A better life
That doesn't always happen here for immigrants
Who are you America?
No discrimination
But you let Arizona pass the SB 1070 law
There's no unity here
Unity would mean sticking together
Helping the immigrants not shutting them out
But you still call yourself the United States of America
So moving
ReplyDeleteI love the repetition of the word "united" in an ironic sense, and the phrase "Who are you America?". It really causes the reader to evaluate what America means to them, and if it is all it is cracked up to be. Nice connection to the Arizona law btw.
ReplyDeletePolitics and the government suck; your poem does a great job at reflecting that. I like it, I like it.
ReplyDeleteI like your poem and I agree with you even though I don't know what SB 1070 law is(:
